I’ve never been to the north or south pole so this is probably going to sound a little ridiculous but I seriously have never seen so much ice in all of my life. Our freezer is an absolute disaster and, to be fair, a disgrace.

If my life real life wasn’t so full of social events, I am sure this would never have happened. My mum is right when she says you notice this sort of stuff more when you’re in all the time instead of being a girlie gadabout town.

Thanks to the hairdryer tip from yesterday’s Zoom quiz, I reckon we saved ourselves at least two hours. It was a constant conveyor belt of hot water, towels and chipping away with a dispensable knife. We even used red-hot trays straight from the oven which was probably not a very good idea but the ice was inches thick so no danger of melting any elements or releasing whatever it is that keeps the freezer below 0 degrees. Note to self: find out what makes a freezer so cold as I have no idea.

In fact, the situation is so bad that with the two drawers being a bit broken, even Dave has relented and ordered some new ones. Neither of us is known for our DIY skills but when his measuring was out by a factor of 2.5, we realised he’d measured it in centimetres and not inches. I know I said I wasn’t going to order anything in this lockdown but when it comes to potential ripping of fingers and trapping of hands, I’ve decided this is essential. My knuckles and hands look like I have been in a fight after wrestling with the kitchen iceberg!

We managed to save the majority of the stuff we had bought but we are going to be having salmon for the next three days as it had started to melt from the hairdryer heat – oopsy. I think this was a sign from the universe to remind us that it was, indeed, Good Friday when people are supposed to eat fish and not the steak, as a special treat, that had been planned.

I always remember Douglas Adams on Good Friday and of his line about, “….after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change….” and think it is especially apt today when we should all be being kind. I do my best to stop at 3 o’clock for a minute of reflection but failed miserably today as I had my nose in my book just chilling in the garden and enjoying the peace.

One of the other odd things I remember about Good Friday is that apparently it is very bad luck to wash and hang out bedsheets. I was told this by a lady I worked with in Boots when I was a Saturday girl all those years ago and, nobody else has ever heard of it. I decided back then not to take any chances so that one has become a superstitious tradition in the Padbury household.

Back in January, I went flying on the ice and have a cracking scar on my right knee. The shorts I am wearing cover this really well and so I decided, again convincing myself this was an essential purchase, to order some more from Next. I hadn’t realised that Next is closed and they’re not taking any orders which, on reflection, is absolutely the right thing to do. I was in danger of slipping back into my old habits there so shall just have to show my scar with pride instead.

The evening entertainment got off to a brilliant start with my very sophisticated cocktail of limoncello & fizz in a very large glass. It didn’t help my brain function and we came 2nd out of 3 in the family quiz. We’re going to have a repeat match on Easter Sunday so hopefully we’ll improve.

This was then followed by a raucous video chat over dinner with more limoncello & fizz with my lovely university flat mates. We were trying to replan our cancelled June 2020 holiday for 2021 and the words “party” & “brewery” spring to mind! Dave cooked my tea – salmon, of course!

My Parallel Universe: On holiday to Herefordshire over Easter with Dave’s lovely family. The weather is perfect and it would have been fabulous fun.

My List:  Just read my book – it was very addictive and relaxing – especially in the sunny garden.

My Lowlight:  The time it took to defrost that bloody freezer! I’ve promised myself “never again”……..until the next time!

My Highlight: Realising Easter will be good fun after all even if it is all done remotely and over some sort of video link.

My Anxiety Level:  Still low and hopefully plateauing like Covid-19.
