The Leader of Trafford council, Andrew Western, has become the new MP for Stretford and Urmston with a majority of 9,906 over the second placed Conservatives taking 69.4 per cent of the vote.

Labour increased its share of the vote from December 2019 where the outgoing MP Kate Green scored 60 per cent

The turnout in the by election was just over 25 per cent

Western said the result sent out a “strong message”, showing 12 years of Conservative government was “coming to an end” and added that “The Tories have given up on governing and it is increasingly clear that the British people are giving up on them.“

Labour stands ready to deliver for our country and only Labour has a plan for working people and to create a fairer, greener, future.

“It is clear from this result tonight, and indeed the result two weeks ago in Chester, that people are ready for a Labour government, and let the message go out tonight that Labour are ready to govern.
