Boris Johnson has called a press conference for 8 p.m. tonight, where he is expected to outline new measures for England.

The measures will effectively take the country back to the first lockdown in March of 2020 which saw schools and universities closed, with all but essential travel banned and a work from home requirement.

The House of Commons will be recalled on Wednesday, enabling MPs to debate and pass legislation enshrining stricter new lockdown measures.

Earlier a study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said that the only way to bring the new strain in England under control was to bring in Tier 4 across the country, shutting schools for a month and vaccinating two million people every week.

The BBC has reported that the UK is set to move into Alert level 5. This means that “there is a material risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed” and the virus is in general circulating and transmission is high or rising exponentially
