You’ve had a long day, and you come home from work. It’s nice to be in your castle, but it can be hard to relax. There are meals to cook, toys to tidy, dishes to clean, and any number of other distractions that will take your attention. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a space in your home where you can go to relax, recharge, and refresh your mind and body? That’s where a meditation space can really help. It’s a place all of your own where you can sit and recenter yourself, that provides some mental health therapy. Here’s how you can create that perfect space for meditating.

Carve Out a Space

Make sure that you have a defined space for your in-home oasis. If you’re lucky, you can do it within the four walls of a separate room. That will make it less likely that you will be interrupted. However, if that’s not possible, you can define a space in a common area. Just make sure to let everyone in your family or your roommates know that the area is for a certain use, and ask not to be distrubed if you are using it. You can separate a common area by using tapestries or even some furniture pieces. It can be anything that will clearly delineate the area and provide any kind of barrier between yourself and the outside world.

Use Scent to Set the Mood

When you are meditating, you don’t want outside interference to cloud your senses and get you out of your headspace. That can happen in a home when there are people moving around, cooking meals, or watching television. Having a scent in your meditation space will help occupy your sense of smell so that it isn’t distracted by anything else. You can use a Zamnesia Nag Champa incense product for example to help soothe your mind and relax your body. You can also burn essential oils that can provide healing benefits along with helping you stay in your zone.

Colors

Speaking of senses, your sense of sight should also be soothed prior to meditation. For that to work, you need to create a visual aesthetic in your meditation space that helps to calm and relax you. If possible, paint the walls in pastelle or neutral colors. Pastels especially give a feeling of being in open space, or the outdoors, which is very conducive to meditation. Usually, some of the bolder colors, such as oranges or reds, can be too harsh, and are associated with emergencies and anxiety. It is best to avoid them.

Floor Surface

You may not have a choice as to what flooring you can use. If you can, wood floors are a great choice, since they provide an authentic, rustic feel that also helps to make the space seem bigger. You can then lay a plush rug in the space for comfort. If you don’t have walls, a rug can also help define your space.

Furniture

Your meditation space does not have to have a lot in it. When it comes to furniture, a stool might be all you need. If you have accessories, such as a diffuser, some speakers, or candles, then a small table would also be appropriate. Too much clutter can make a space feel claustrophobic and stressful, so in most cases less is better.

Lighting

Ideally, your space can have natural light. Artificial light can be harsh, and takes away from the authentic feel you want to have. Natural light is invigorating and provides health benefits, too. Natural light for meditation will help activate some of your brain functions and help your mind focus when you are meditating. If you do have to have artificial light, then choose a soft lighting option that is gentle on your eyes and won’t burn through your eyelids when they are closed.

Go Outside If You Can

Your home meditation space doesn’t have to be indoors. You can also create a wonderful space outside. The benefit is that it will get you closer to nature, which is calming and refreshing. You can install a pergola to protect against the weather and to define your space. Feeling the breeze, and listening to the birds can be very therapeutic, and will put you in the perfect mindset for meditating.

There’s nothing better than having a place to come home to that allows you to refresh your mind and spirit after a long day. Create the perfect meditation space in your home by keeping these simple concepts in mind.
