The story of BBC Children’s broadcasting – past, present and future is told in a new, free exhibition which had opened at The Lowry.

Here’s One We Made Earlier, which runs until Sunday, 12 October, brings together the programmes and characters that defined UK childhood from Bill & Ben, Muffin the Mule and Andy Pandy to Teletubbies, Wolfblood, Newsround and, of course, Blue Peter.

Here’s One We Made Earlier, which runs until Sunday, 12 October, brings together the programmes and characters that defined UK childhood – from Bill & Ben, Muffin the Mule and Andy Pandy to Teletubbies, Wolfblood, Newsround and, of course, Blue Peter.

It reflects on the shifting perceptions of children in society, from 1922 when toddlers were asked to ‘sit comfortably’ in front of the family wireless for Children’s Hour, to today’s children who take centre stage on air and online.

Iconic items, footage, puppets and props from the BBC Archives and private and public collections across the country have been sensitively displayed – many for the first time since transmission.

Michael Simpson, director of visual art and engagement at The Lowry, said: “The BBC’s 92-year commitment to children’s broadcasting ensures Here’s One We Made Earlier has something for everyone. The school summer holidays are just around the corner and this exhibition is a great – and free – way for families and groups of friends to compare and discuss their childhood memories.”

Joe Godwin, director of BBC Children’s, said: “This fantastic exhibition gives today’s children as well as grown-up children a chance to take a trip down memory lane with BBC children’s programmes. Our programmes have defined childhoods for decades, and continue to do so and this exhibition also brings us right up to date with today’s favourites.

“Working alongside the Lowry to bring this exhibition to life has been an absolute pleasure and I hope families enjoy the exhibition as much as we have we enjoyed putting it together.”
