Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, has been handed the keys to its flagship Islington Wharf scheme in Manchester city centre – a development which acts as a standard bearer for the provision of affordable homes in the city.

Waterside Places Ltd – a joint venture between Muse and the Canal and River Trust – officially handed over the £34m (GDV) development to Latimer in August, representing its final phase of regeneration at its Ancoats scheme.

More than half of the apartments at Islington Wharf will be available on an affordable basis, with 54 of the 106 homes available through shared ownership. Sainsbury’s Local is set to take the ground floor unit at the development.

Located on Great Ancoats Street, Islington Wharf offers a collection of modern one-and two-bedroom apartments are surrounded by picturesque canal-side walks and well connected to the rest of the city and the Ancoats district.

Prices start from £80,850 for a 35% share of a first release apartment valued at £231,000 full price, requiring a 5 per cent deposit of just £4,043.

Richard Cook, group development director at Clarion Housing Group and its development arm Latimer said: “It’s great news that Islington Wharf has now been handed over and we are really excited to welcome our first residents from September onwards.

“Delivering aspirational homes in sought after locations through affordable means is key to our offering at Latimer. By offering stylish contemporary apartments in one of Manchester’s most vibrant and exciting districts, Islington Wharf is a perfect example of this.”

The development will help support Manchester City Council in delivering key targets set out in its Housing Strategy, which aims to deliver at least 10,000 affordable homes in the next decade.

Tom Webber, senior development manager at Waterside Places, said: “We are pleased to hand over the keys to the final phase to Latimer, which will provide additional, much-needed homes in the heart of Manchester city centre.”

Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and development, said: “We know that demand for quality affordable housing is high in Manchester and through our ambitious housing strategy not only have we committed to delivering 10,000 affordable homes over the next decade, but we have also pledged to support more Manchester people onto the housing ladder and into their own property.

“This development is therefore a twin boon for our city centre and we welcome the drive from our housing partners to help deliver the homes our residents need.”
