Andy Burnham will today become the first Grrater Manchester MP to be Prime Minister since Arthur Balfour who represented Manchester East between 1902 and 1905 and the first in the North West since Harold Wilson who stepped down in 1976
Perhaps more telling he will be the sixth Prime Minister in ten years and the seventh to be looking after Larry the Cat
He will pledge to bring “stable and responsible” politics to Britain in a speech in Downing Street which could be given without using the usual lectern after being asked to form a Government by the King
He won’t have to put up with the usual background of music from outside the gates of Downing Street as the police banned the use of amplified noise equipment outside
And then he will be greeted by a load of security briefings, calls with world leader including US President Donald Trump, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz of Germany.
and will write the letter of last resort with his instructions for what to do in the event of a nuclear annihilation
Then will begin the task of announcing his new cabinet when all the speculation of the last few weeks will finally be put to bed
MP’s in the region are expected to feature heavily in the list with Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell set to be Deputy PM according to reports while Wigan’s Lisa Nandy is being tipped as leading a new super department with responsibility for devolution and the regions
Jonatbon Reynolds currently chief Whip is expected to move back into the Department for Business and then there is Angela Rayner being widely tipped for Health Secretary with the task of pushing through social care reform
