Solidarity and love has spread across the North of late, and there’s no change at the Ideal Home Show or Eat & Drink Festival at EventCity, Manchester this weekend.

Organisers at the show have commissioned a giant edible bee spectacle, featuring an 8ft wing span and a 6ft long body, in order to raise money for the victims and families affected by the attack in the city last month – with all proceeds being given to the WE LOVE MCR Emergency Fund.

The Manchester bee cake has been created by crafters Louise Haythornthwaite (from Alana Lily Chocolates & Cakes), Lynsey Wilton-Eddleston (from Sugarwhizz) and cake decorator Lou Cross.

The Bee stands tall and long at the Ideal Home Show/Eat & Drink Festival at EventCity this weekend, showcasing 80kg of sugarpaste, 60kg of frosting, and 25kg of strawberry jam.

Weighing in at almost 325kg, visitors will be invited to purchase a slice of the delectable cake as another show of solidarity and support for Manchester. In total, it will serve around 8,000 people, with each slice costing a suggested donation of just £1.

Rob Nathan, Marketing Director at Media 10, commented: “We love this city, and our Manchester show is always one filled with the friendliest of atmospheres. We wanted to do something to show our solidarity with, and support for, Manchester.

“The bee is a symbol being shared around the city at this hard time, so we have created something grand as a gesture of love, in the form of a cake that people can either enjoy at the show, or take home. Proceeds will go towards the WE LOVE MCR Emergency Fund to support those affected by recent events.”

The cake will be sold by individual slice, on a first come first served basis.

Louise Haythornthwaite, from Alana Lily Chocolates & Cakes, said: “I love a challenge, and love supporting great causes whenever I can – and this production is both of those things.

“Everybody has been so helpful and supportive with us whilst creating the giant bee cake, from suppliers and wholesalers, right through to our day jobs and our families and childcare arrangements. It was an absolute honour to be asked to be part of this, and we thoroughly enjoyed putting our love and efforts into it for Manchester.”

Visitors can find the Manchester Bee Cake in Eat & Drink Festival, located next to the Foodie Lab, along with donation buckets.
