Eccles Cross is to become the focus for human rights campaigners this Saturday.
Eccles Town Team, which brings together local residents, traders, Salford City Council and partner organisations, has organised a one hour candlelit vigil to mark Human Rights Day on Saturday December 10.
People will be invited to light one small candle and place it at Eccles Cross where hundreds left tributes to local taxi driver and aid worker Alan Henning after his capture and tragic murder.
Councillor Lisa Stone, chair of Eccles Town Team, said: “Holocaust survivor, author and peace campaigner Elie Wiesel, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, said: ‘Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religions, or political views, that place must, at this moment, become the centre of the universe.’
“For just one hour on December 10 we are going to make Eccles the centre of the universe, with poems, songs and reading from people who have experienced persecution.
“We will be reaching out to everyone still suffering persecution to show our solidarity with them but also celebrating joy in many successes in fighting injustice. And with our candles – a symbol of light in the darkness – we will be showing hope for our future. People can bring their own candles or light one provided for them but I hope they will come and join us.”
The event is supported by Amnesty International UK and Salford Angels WI and takes place at Eccles Cross, Church Street at 4pm. Please dress warmly.
