A special exhibition of the works of the late artist and teacher David Langston is taking place on the 18 and 19 March at the Saan 1 Art Gallery in the Northern Quarter. ‘Dear Manchester’ features a series of over 40 paintings in oil and several charcoal sketches which feature some of Manchester’s most iconic buildings and landmarks.

These include the famous Express newspaper building on Ancoats Street, Manchester Central (GMEX), Angel Meadows and even a homage to the famous Haçienda night club.

The show, curated by the late artist’s wife Ann, also features some well-known Lancashire scenes too and is open to the public free for the weekend as a celebration of the artist’s passion for the city, region and for his love of art.

Langston, who passed away in March last year, aged 80, was an avid sketcher and painter for over five decades, finding a passion for painting and creativity after being something of a self-described “tearaway” in his youth. An accomplished and popular teacher of English, he taught at St Peter’s RC High School in Prestwich (now St Monica’s) for 22 years.

The ‘adopted’ Mancunian was originally from Carlisle but made Manchester his home, following his marriage and resided in Prestwich and then Bury in his later years. He was father to two daughters, Clare and Katy, who have helped organise the show.

The exhibition is endearingly titled, “Dear Manchester” and attendees will see for themselves the bold landscapes and buildings that captured the talented Langston’s heart.

Several of the original art pieces will be available for sale with 20% of proceeds going to the artist’s favourite charities.

The gallery will be open to the public on Sat 18th and Sun 19th between 12pm and 6pm. Free entry.
