Coronation Street actor Daniel Brocklebank is having to get used to sharing the limelight after adopting an adorable Dachshund.

Daniel, who plays vicar Billy Mayhew in the soap, recently adopted the four-month old who was being cared for at Dogs Trust Manchester after being illegally smuggled into the UK.

Daniel, who has called the pup Colin, says:

“I had been thinking about getting a dog for quite a while but it’s a huge commitment so I wanted to wait for the right time. I had moved house, I have some time off work and everything just fell into place.

“I knew I wanted to adopt a rescue dog and it was love at first sight! He has settled in wonderfully and his confidence is growing by the day. He loves to play and he loves heading out and meeting lots of dogs and people. He attracts a lot of attention! He’s a joy.”

Colin was one of a litter of six puppies illegally imported into the UK from Hungary. Having travelled over 1,000 miles in horrendous conditions the litter was seized at the border by enforcement authorities before being looked after at Dogs Trust.

Over the past four years nearly 1,000 illegally imported dogs have been cared for by Dogs Trust including French Bulldogs, Dachshunds and Pugs, which would have been worth more than £1 million to those illegally importing them.

Carol Margieson, Deputy Manager at Dogs Trust Manchester, said:

“Colin and his siblings had a tough start in life and it’s fantastic that they have all gone on to brilliant homes. If, like Daniel, you are ready to welcome a dog into your life, please consider adopting a rescue dog. Just like Colin, all of our dogs, young and old, deserve a second chance at happiness with a family that will love and care for them for the rest of their lives.”
