It’s probably better known for its reds but an event in Manchester showcased the white wines of the Rhône Valley which are gaining rapid recognition for their exceptional diversity, quality, and character.
With 27 AOCs that can produce white wines in the north and south of the Rhône Valley, white wine production in 2025 reached 13% and equalised rosé production in the region for the first time.

Rhône whites are crafted from fifteen authorised grape varieties, including White Grenache, Viognier, Clairette Blanche, Roussanne and Marsanne.
These wines present a wide range of styles – from fresh and lively to rich and complex – catering to every palate, occasion, and cuisine, and steadily winning support among UK consumers and wine professionals alike.
This evolution sits alongside a strong commitment to sustainability. For the 2025 vintage, 63% of Rhône AOP production is part of an environmental approach, with 25% of Rhône Valley wines now certified organic, a clear indicator of the region’s ongoing environmental engagement.
The day at Freight Island featured an exclusive trade tasting from 11 am to 5 pm, with expert-led masterclasses hosted by Rhône specialist Matt Walls while during the evening, consumers were invited to enjoy an immersive tasting experience designed to introduce them to the breadth of Rhône whites in a lively and accessible setting, hosted by a drag queen, adding personality and theatrical flair to the evening’s wine discovery experience.
This event offered a unique opportunity for industry insiders and enthusiasts to deepen their appreciation and discover the remarkable variety within Rhône whites which can be summarised in the following three styles.
The Fresh & Lively category is characterised by crisp acidity and vibrant aromas of citrus and white fruits. Grown in cooler, well-drained soils, these wines often include Grenache blanc, Bourboulenc, and Piquepoul Blanc grapes and utilise reductive winemaking to preserve their zesty freshness. Ideal as an apéritif or paired with light fare such as salads and fresh goat cheese, these wines offer invigorating brightness.

The Fruity & Round style provides a fuller palate with a natural balance of tropical and stone fruits. Made from Grenache, Clairette, and Bourboulenc harvested at peak maturity, these wines maintain freshness while delivering a round, harmonious mouthfeel. They pair well with white fish, light meats, and milder cheeses, making them versatile and approachable.
For those drawn to deeper complexity, the Rich & Complex style delivers luxurious layers of fruit, spice, and minerality. Featuring Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne, these wines are often harvested overripe and aged in oak barrels to develop subtle notes of toast and honey. These whites are a sophisticated choice for gastronomes seeking intricate flavour profiles.
The Rhône Valley also offers exquisite, sweet and sparkling whites worth exploring. Muscat de Beaumes de Venise and Rasteau Vins Doux Naturels presents a luscious, aromatic sweetness perfect for sipping or dessert pairing, while sparkling Clairette de Die, Saint-Péray and Crémant de Die bring elegant bubbles and fresh, delicate character, ideal for celebrations or as refreshing apéritifs.
Rhône Valley white wines showcase an evolving landscape of style, terroir, and tradition. As their profile continues to rise in the UK, they invite consumers and trade alike to discover these exceptional wines and enjoy the richness they bring to the world of white wine.
