Manchester City require three points at Brighton next Sunday to be confirmed Premier League champions after a Vincent Kompany broke the deadlock on a tense night at the Etihad Stadium.

The City skipper collected a square pass from Aymeric Laporte and strode forward, taking two touches and ignoring his team-mates to unleash a fierce, right-footed drive from 30 yards which hit the back of the net leaving former City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel no chance of saving.

If City beat Brighton away on Sunday in their final league game they will have 98 points and they will be champions. There is nothing Liverpool, at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a fixture which can take them to 97 points, can then do to stop them.
