Hanami, which literally translates to “flower watching”, is an annual celebration of the cherry blossom and spring-time.

People gather around cherry blossom trees with family and friends to enjoy delicious drinks and food under the beautiful pink trees.

Cottonopolis have created their very own blossoms within the venue; beneath which, guests can sit amongst friends and family – and where they are also invited to leave a message of gratitude among the blossoms. In return – much like the spring gives us the gift of new beginnings, Cottonopolis will pick messages of gratitude each week, through Hanami, and gift-back cocktails, food and more.

One lucky winner will also win the main prize of a table of 6 with a £500 food and drink tab.

To coincide with the celebration, Cottonopolis have also launched a cocktail menu in partnership with Suntory, which takes inspiration from Hanami and the Japanese teachings of living in the moment, with an appreciation of life itself.

In Japan, it is the brief and fleeting lifespan of the blossoming petals that sets the cherry tree apart; as shortly after the transient flowers develop, the wind will pick them up and whisk them away again.

It is this cyclical passing of time that defines the cherry blossom philosophy. The natural spectacle, which is iconic the world-around, also serves as a beautiful metaphor for life and teaches us to savour and show gratitude for what we have.

Nothing seems more reminiscent of human mortality than the cherry blossom tree, which is why it’s such a prominent subject within Japanese arts, songs, poetry and more. The team at Cottonopolis invite you to enjoy a ‘wabi-sabi’ moment (a view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection) during your own Hanami with them.

All who dine will be invited to leave a message of gratitude – but you don’t need a table booking to take part. Simply head to the bar and request a Hanami envelope.

Hanami at Cottonopolis will run until 31st May.
