A new open call has been announced by Bury Town of Culture to find six local artists to create a series of creative micro-commissions for the town.

Applications are now open for artists working in any medium including art, prose, design, film, poetry or performance to submit their ideas.

Each successful commission will receive £500 worth of funding from Bury Town of Culture as well as ‘in kind’ support from the town’s cultural partners including The Met theatre and Bury Art Museum.

This latest initiative is part of a year-long programme of events to celebrate Bury’s Town of Culture status which will run throughout 2021 and comes on the back of last year’s successful Greater Manchester Combined Authority Commissions, three of which were from Bury and will be showcased in the coming weeks.

This year’s theme is all about celebrating Bury’s cultural offer, rich heritage and diverse communities. The criteria for the commissions include:

  • There will be six commissions in total (one for each township of the borough) up to the value of £500
  • Applicants must be resident in the borough
  • Proposals can take the form of any creative medium
  • All commissions are to be produced and accessed by the general public in a Covid secure way

Councillor Jane Black, cabinet member for the cultural economy, said “I’m delighted that we are able to fund six micro-commissions for the borough and to provide creative people with the perfect platform to showcase their talents.

“This scheme provides not just funds to individuals in our arts community who have been detrimentally affected by cancelled events or commissions but also an opportunity to express their creativity and showcase the amazing talent we have in our borough. This project is the ideal opportunity for any local emerging artists to get involved with and we are looking forward to seeing what creative talent we have on our doorstep.”

An application form is available at www.bury.gov.uk/culturecommissionswith a deadline for submission of 10am on Monday 15 March 2021.
