Reports this morning suggest that Greater Manchester’s Mayor has been told by the Government that Greater Manchester will be moved into Tier 2 Covid regulations in two weeks time.

According to the Sunday Times the Mayor was told that the region was two weeks behind Liverpool in getting the infection rates down

“It is now clear Burnham has been tipped the wink by ministers that his region will be downgraded to tier 2. An ally said: “We are about two weeks behind Liverpool so we see no reason why we won’t be in tier 2. We have been reassured that the review will be meaningful.” That is supported by senior figures in No 10. “December 16 is a big deal,” one added.“

The news comes amid a growing rebellion amongst Tory MP’s over the Tier system with reports that the Prime Minister has written to his MP’s saying that the Tier system will end in just nine weeks, and that millions of people who will be hit with the toughest restrictions this week will see them eased on December 19.

It has become increasing clear that the Government will need the support of Labour to get the Tier system approved in Parliament with up to 70 Tory MP’s planning to rebel against their party when the plans are voted on
