Leigh MP, former Health Secretary and Greater Manchester Mayoral Candidate Andy Burnham has stepped in to ask the Prime Minister to stop the closure of Prestwich’s walk in centre.

Joined by Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth, Burnham said that the closure proposals were stupid, given that thousands of people were using the centres, and the closure would simply put more pressure on local A&E services

The Centre, along with the centre in Bury is due to shut so resources can be moved to NHS 111, GP surgeries and A&E departments and will remain purely as a health centre.

However over 2,000 people have so far signed a petition to save both Moorgate Primary Care Centre and Prestwich Walk In Centre.

The new system proposed will see an integrated model of care will be developed with A&E departments at Fairfield General Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital, in which minor care staff would be deployed while both Bury and Prestwich would remain as healthcare sites.
