A 28-year-old man has been killed after he was hit by a stolen car in Harpurhey yesterday

Two men, aged 18 and 29,  have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in custody for questioning.

The black BMW 320 was seen driving along Fernclough Road towards Lathbury Road around 8.15pm before it collided with a 28-year-old who was crossing Fernclough Road with a friend at the time.

The driver failed to stop at the scene and the car was later found abandoned on Clevedon Street in Harpurhey.

Police believe the car was to stolen from Lancashire on 22 November and had false plates which read FN13 WRP – for forensic examination.

The man was taken to hospital but sadly died.

Enquiries are ongoing to trace a third man and officers are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information about it, to contact police immediately.

Sergeant Lee Westhead, from GMP’s Serious Collision Unit, said: “A man has tragically lost his life as a result of this collision and the driver didn’t even stop despite knowing full well that someone was seriously injured.

“Specially trained officers are supporting the family who are understandably beside themselves.

“We have launched an investigation and extensive enquiries have already identified that this car was stolen and driven on false plates.

“We will find the person or people responsible for this and we will not stop until we have them.

“I would urge anyone involved in this devastating incident to do the right thing and contact police immediately.

“The same applies to anyone who knows anything about it – please get in touch.”

Witnesses or anyone with information or dash cam footage are urged to call SCIU on 0161 856 4741.
