A man has been arrested on suspicion on causing death by careless driving and remains in custody for questioning after a man in his 70’s was hit by a car in Cheetham Hill this afternoon.

The pedestrian was allegedly hit by  a blue DAF lorry around 2.00pm this afternoon on Cheetham Hill Road.

Road closures were put in place on Cheetham Hill Road, Greenhill Street and Heywood Street but have since been lifted.

PC Paul Hailwood, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic set of circumstances that has led to the death of an elderly man.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

“We have one man in custody but our investigation continues. I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything to come forward.

“I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision to please contact us.”
