A stunning 70th minute try from Denny Solomona, which followed earlier fine scores by Marland Yarde and Denny himself, looked to have secured what would have been a deserved win for Steve Diamond’s side.

But – not for the first time this season, there was to be a cruel late twist in store.

And with just 60 seconds left on the clock and Sale 32-26 to the good, a period of frenzied Bath pressure ended with flanker Zach Mercer breaking the Sharks’ defensive wall to score his second and the hosts’ third try.

Fly-half James Wilson – who kicked 18 points in total in an impressive display – then kept his nerve to successfully land the conversion and make it a shattering finale for the Sharks.
