Four works by the renowned German painter, Paula Modersohn-Becker, are to feature in Chantal Joffe’s Personal Feeling Is the Main Thing exhibition at The Lowry. (19 May – 2 Sept)
Modersohn-Becker was born in Dresden, Germany in 1876 and is widely regarded as the first female artist to have painted a nude self-portrait. She died in 1907, just days after giving birth to her only daughter, Mathilde.
Her work is seldom seen in the UK, but the exhibition will feature four Modersohn-Becker paintings and drawings: ‘Infant with the Hand of the Mother’ (1903), ‘Young Girl with Yellow Flowers in a Glass’ (1902), ‘Seated female nude with standing child’ (1906) and ‘Seated female nude on the floor with child’ (1906).
Commenting on the inclusion of the work in her exhibition, Joffe said: “Paula Modersohn-Becker has been an enduring influence on my work. She challenged centuries-old representations of the female body in art and paved the way for generations of women artists and I am proud to be able to showcase her work alongside my own.”
The exhibition forms part of the Salford arts venue’s biennial Week 53 festival, which runs from Thu 17 – Mon 28 May.
