The Astra was in collision with a blue Vauxhall Meriva and a woman in her 40s from the Meriva vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where she remains.

A man in the Astra made off from the scene on foot and officers are appealing for anyone with information or anyone who may have seen him to get in touch.

The incident has been referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch in line with normal procedure.

Inspector Jonathan Shilvock, from GMP’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “This collision has left a woman with serious injuries in hospital and our thoughts remain with her whilst she makes a recovery.

“We’re working to find a man who was suspected to have been driving the Astra. There may have been a number of people who witnessed the collision or saw the man make off and we’d ask those people to come forward and speak to us.
