Medical student Hannah Chow is the latest person to benefit from the Feryal Rajah Trust.
Hannah, from Eccles, will use the £800 to help her through her master’s degree at UCL in London where she will specialise in Reproductive Science and Women’s Health.
Previously she studied Medicine at Queen’s University in Belfast.
The trust was set up in recognition of the work of former Salford Dr Feryal Rajah, who tragically died in her 30s. She was the former wife of Deputy City Mayor Councillor John Merry, and he now commemorates her life and work by offering awards through the trust.
Councillor Charlie McIntyre, the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, greeted Hannah and her family in the Mayor’s Parlour. He said: “My husband was a doctor and I used to be a nurse so I fully support all young people who want to pursue a career in medicine.
“It was an absolute pleasure to meet Hannah and her family in the Mayor’s Parlour and hear about her education so far and plans for the future. I wish her all the best and I know she is going to be a big success whatever field of medicine she chooses to go down.”
Councillor John Merry said: “My wife was passionate about Salford and women who wanted to pursue education in a medical related field. Her memorial service was filled with patients who she treated and people whose life she made better thanks to her skills as a doctor.
“Because of this I decided her legacy must continue so I set up the trust in her name and I am extremely proud of all the people we have been able to help. A big congratulations goes to Hannah and I can’t wait to hear from her as she continues with her studies.”
Hannah said: “Thank you for the cheque, the money will help me to achieve my goal which I‘ve had since I was a child. It is a tough path to follow but I want to contribute to society by making difference.”
Councillor John Warmisham who is the Chair of Trustees said: “It is so important that women in Salford are given an opportunity to can go into a medical career. The trust is a fantastic thing and we have been able to help so many women over the years.
“I’m sure Hannah will go on to do great things in such a specialised subject area.”
