Tributes have continued to pour in this afternoon following the tragic death of the young footballer Ross Aikenhead who died over the weekend

Ross who played for North West Counties team Winsford United died suddenly over the weekend although his cause of death is still not known

His teams fixture against Cheadle Heath Nomads was postponed on Saturday but the club played their Easter Monday fixture after his teammates said it would have been what Ross had wanted

In a statement the club said

”It’s with deep sadness that we have to announce that our player Ross Aikenhead has sadly passed away.

“Ross was a fantastic young man and a terrific footballer. He will be sorely missed by everyone associated with the club, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Ross’s family and friends.”

An emotional post from his fellow players read:

“Rest easy mate, was an absolute pleasure to share the pitch with such a great player and also to share the changing room with such a great character.

Tributes were made across a number of games yesterday this afternoon at many local grounds with a minutes silence or applause being held including the game between the two Wythenshawe’s where Ross had previously played
