Rochdale MP, Tony Lloyd, is demanding that the Government steps in to stop the sale of dangerous electrical goods on online marketplaces.
“Many people may be unaware that online sellers don’t have to stick to the rigorous safety standards we expect from products sold in the UK.Since the onset of Covid, parents have turned to online marketplaces to source toys and games to educate their children. The Conservative Government has cut funding to frontline trading standards services by more than 50% in just over seven years.”
It stands to reason that this will have contributed to the rise of unsafe electrical products, and other consumer goods, in homes across the UK.”

Online marketplaces are not bound by the same laws as traditional retailers, which means dangerous electrical products containing sub-standard or counterfeit parts are being sold to unknowing customers.
“It cannot simply be left to the online platforms themselves. I have written to the Business Secretary calling for a clear plan to address the sale of dangerous goods online, including a change in the law which ensures online marketplaces follow the same safety regulations as other UK retailers, and that any electrical products reported as unsafe are removed from the site within 24 hours.”
We must be properly protected when we buy products, and this must include online purchases.”
