In what could be a two horse race both Reform and the Greens are set to announce their candidates later today for the Gorton and Denton by election

Reform are expected to reveal a big name candidate with rumours that it will be policy chief Zia Yusuf while the Greens though not expected to unveil their candidate this evening have leader Zak Polanski heading to the constituency later today

Labour, if rumours are to be believed have already written off the seat with a senior figure telling the Times this morning that “realistically we know that we’re going to lose” adding that the decision over Andy Burnham was made because they thought it was a choice between losing the mayoralty or the by-election.

Labour though have to pick a candidate and five names are being touted currently including Eamonn O’Brien the current leader of Bury Council as well as Julie Reid, Angeliki Stogia,Abid Chohan and Rabnawaz Akbar all local councillors in the constituency

Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee will make a decision on the shortlist for the seat today.
