Ambitious plans to transform the Wigan Pier area have been announced as the former nightclub building is finally demolished.

A 10-year plan has been developed for the whole area to become known as the Wigan Pier Quarter which will include the building of a major performance venue and new canal boat facilities.

It comes as the building that once housed the famous Wigan Pier nightclub is knocked down. It was due to be demolished earlier in the year but problems securing the neighbouring building have delayed the work. Demolition is now well underway and should be complete soon.

Wigan Council will announce a development partner in the next few weeks who will oversee work on the Wigan Pier Quarter, which includes the canal and mills around Pottery Road.

Initial plans for the scheme include the building of a 1,200 seat performance venue at the Today’s Community Church, new canal-side housing and leisure development and new retail development.

There will be improvements to the canal towpath throughout the area and the creation of new moorings in the canal basin creating overnight mooring facilities.

Councillor David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “The regeneration of the Wigan Pier area is an important priority for the council and the local community and we have been working hard behind the scenes to make things happen.

“We have been in discussion with developers and landowners about a number of key sites and where possible, such as at Trencherfield Mill and with the former nightclub, we are taking action ourselves to bring about improvements and tackle some of the worst problems.
