The creator and chief scriptwriter of the Channel Four series The Mill, John Fay will be discussing how television presents history at an event in Manchester this Saturday.

The Drama was based on real events at Styal Mill in the 1830s, the first series aired in 2013 and showed the struggle for better working conditions and the Ten Hour Day. The second series, set in the 1840s at the time of the Chartists, will be broadcast this autumn.

In addition to the Mill John’s work on television over the last 20 years has included Blue Murder, Brookside, Coronation Street, Clocking Off, Primeval and Torchwood.

The meeting has been organised by the Mary Quaile Club. One of the organisers, Michael Herbert, said, “ We are delighted that a writer of the calibre of John will be sharing his insights based on many years work on television.”

The Mary Quaile Club was set was set up in December 2013 to hold regular discussions on working class history and the links with contemporary political issues facing working people in Britain. The Club takes its name from the Manchester trade unionist, Mary Quaile.
