Tameside College students create one of a kind mosaics highlighting hate crime awareness project.

ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) students at the college worked with local artist Caroline Coates and Tameside Council as part of the community hate crime awareness project.

Over 100 students took part in the project to create two unique mosaics, which showcase the college’s diverse community. Both 16-18 and adult ESOL groups were involved in the initiative, who chose key messages to include in the mosaics such as ‘stronger together’ and ‘peace over hate’.

The project, which is funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Tameside Council, is part of a wider initiative to combat hate crime and further community cohesion.

Artist Caroline has worked with several local organisations, including Tameside College, to develop the mosaic project and plans are underway to install across the borough over the coming months.

The mosaics were unveiled by The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Shibley Alam and participating students, during an official ceremony on Tuesday 19th May.

Andy MacLeod, head of department for ESOL and community education, said: “”The mosaic project has been a fantastic opportunity for our ESOL students to come together, share their experiences and celebrate the diversity that makes our college community special. Students have created something meaningful that promotes messages of unity, respect and inclusion. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved and hope these mosaics will help encourage positive conversations about community cohesion and standing against hate crime across the borough.”
