Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer has returned fire as speculation continues over Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s leadership ambitions
After yesterday’s Daily Telegraph story that Labour MP’s were urging Burnham to stand, Starmer compared a Burnham return to a LIz Truss Premiership
While he refused to ‘get drawn into commenting on the mayor’s personal ambitions’ The Prime Minister told ITV that there was ‘nothing progressive about borrowing more than the country needs to’. adding:
‘Three years ago this week… Liz Truss showed what happens if you abandon fiscal rules.’ She did it for tax cuts, but the same crisis in the markets ‘would happen if it was spending’.
Meanwhile A ‘senior government source’ told the Times: ‘Burnham wants a big fight and for us to make this all about him, but it’s now got to the point of making people in the cabinet want to tell him to f*** off.’
The fight back from the Starmer camp continues this morning again in the Telegraph with a story that Starmer’s allies are planning to head Burnham off at the Watford Gap by blocking any attempt by the “King of the North” to return to the Commons while the Financial Times reports that bond investors are warning that a Burnham government could spark a fresh sell-off on gilts and the pound,
