There is much speculation in the press this morning that Keir Starmer is expected to announce tomorrow that he will step down as prime minister

It comes after overwhelming pressure from Labour MPs to make way for Andy Burnham to become Labour leader

According to Sky New’s Beth Rigby Miliband, Mahmood, Alexander & Cooper told PM to stand down.

“I’m told a ‘sizeable number’ in cabinet said same, while PLP withdrawing support. PM this weekend ‘reflecting what best in the national interest, we’re coming to a decision soon’ says source in contact with PM.”

Speaking with the BBC this morning minister Peter Kyle was explicit that he does not want a coronation of Andy Burnham

He said that a leadership contest that debates how Labour can best hold Reform at bay would be preferable, but that the transition from Keir Starmer to a new prime minister must be “functional” and orderly.
