ST ANNE’S School in Denton have just proved the old saying that you need a bit of luck to get your hands on a cup – in their case no less than the Premier League Trophy itself.
When the Denton primary signed up for the Premier League Stars learning programme they were entered into a draw with 999 other schools from England and Wales. To their amazement and delight, their name was one of only five to be pulled out of the hat.

The cup, which normally resides in the trophy cabinet at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, was in Denton on Tuesday, December 6, where it took centre stage on a day of activities. There were literacy workshops, photographs, and football coaching sessions led by St Anne’s partners from Manchester City’s City in the Community programme.

Sheena Hyman, headteacher at St Anne’s, said: “We were delighted win a visit from the Premier League Trophy Tour as a bonus for joining Premier League Primary Stars.

“Our children love to follow their teams and have a great interest in the whole Premier League. It was such a treat to have the amazing trophy visiting our school for all to witness first-hand.

“Last year’s Premier League Reading Stars intervention was the most popular we have ever had in school. It was greatly enjoyed by the children and staff and really impacted on progress.”

Premier League Primary Stars is a free online resource for teachers offering information packs, classroom assets, videos and planning tools across a range of subjects, including maths and English.

It also includes events like the Premier League Schools Tournament and other offers such as the players’ kit scheme which allows primary schools to apply for free Nike strips for their football team.

Cllr Lynn Travis, Tameside Council’s executive member for lifelong learning, said: “What a wonderful way for youngsters to get help with their learning, and well done to the Premier League for offering such a super incentive.

“I’m sure the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Premier League championship trophy and getting their picture taken with it.”
