Reform UK’s candidate for Greater Manchester Mayor Sian Astley yesterday [Thursday 16 July] met with campaigners and veterans in front of Bury’s Castle Armoury and committed to supporting the reopening of the building.

The visit came one day after the motion tabled by the Reform UK group to save the Armoury was passed by Bury Council.

The motion called for the Armoury to be removed from the market, with Reform UK group leader Cllr Jack Rydheard suggesting that the building has the potential to “attract tourists to the town” and “enhanc[e] the education of local people of all ages”.

Reform UK candidate for Mayor of Greater Manchester Cllr Sian Astley said:

“The Castle Armoury holds a special place in the hearts of many veterans in Bury and across Greater Manchester. Its safeguarding and restoration presents an incredible opportunity to promote tourism and drive economic growth in Bury.

“As Mayor, I would fully back the efforts spearheaded by Reform UK and Bury Council to get the armoury back to its former glory. It’s about time we brought back pride in our military history.”
