After the success of last year’s huge birthday giveaway, Historic Salford pub The Black Friar is back running a special £33 menu and giving away over £70K worth of scratch card prizes all month this August.
The Grade II Listed pub reopened in 2021 after being lovingly restored, becoming a favourite of locals and tourists alike. The team at the independent pub now plans to give back to their loyal guests – hosting a huge giveaway throughout August to celebrate their third anniversary.
During the Black Friar’s birthday month, every visitor will receive a free instant win scratch card with their bill. Prizes include winning your meal on the spot, free cocktails, or vouchers to be redeemed in September. Last August saw 20 meals given away on the spot, including one bill over £1000, and there’s even more to win this year!
Both drinkers and diners will receive a scratch card each per visit, so are guaranteed to win one of the mega prizes on offer. The total prize value across the month is over a whopping £70K, with the scratch cards available from 1st August for the whole month until they run out.
From 5th August, The Black Friar will also offer a special new birthday menu curated by award-winning Chef Ben Chaplin and his team. Continuing the theme of three, the 3rd Birthday Menu will be priced at £33 for 3 courses and will be available from Monday to Saturday.
The new menu will feature a delicious selection of brand new à la carte dishes, such as; Harissa Spiced Lamb Meatballs with mint yoghurt, toasted almonds + pomegranate; Whole Line Honey Glazed Mackerel with horseradish new potatoes + radish salad; the Pork Tomahawk + Baked Feta with grilled peaches, chorizo + peach jam; and the, Sicilian Lemon Tart with burnt buttermilk + lime sorbet.
Additionally, authentic Japanese spirits brand, House of Suntory has worked with the team to transform the outdoor tavern into a captivating Japanese-inspired cherry blossom garden. As part of this, The Black Friar will also be serving up its specially curated House of Suntory cocktail menu including the Coco Roku, a mix of Roku Gin, Blackfriars Pilsner, Honey, Angostura + Lemon; and the Suntory Spritz a mix of Haku vodka, watermelon soda, mint, strawberry + lime.

“At the Black Friar, our main focus (other than top quality drinks and grub) is to give back to our local community. We hope that by offering some amazing prizes that our guests will feel the love.”
Alongside the birthday celebrations, The Black Friar will feature live local musicians every Tuesday from 6pm and Saturday afternoons. The award-winning Garden and fully covered Tavern are open every day. Guests can also enjoy Happy Hour on weekdays (4-6.30pm**), where £4 pints and £6 cocktails will be on offer; alongside the Suntory Sessions every Saturday between 3-5 pm where The Suntory cocktails are available for just £8.
The grade II listed pub dates back over 200 years, and was originally known as the School Inn, but burned down. It was renamed the Black Friar when it was rebuilt in 1886. It was open continuously from then until 2001, when it burned down a second time. The building has since been refurbed to include a huge award-winning beer garden and outdoor tavern, cosy pub and grand glass room.
The Black Friar is located on Blackfriars Road, just a 10 minute walk from Deansgate. To book a table, head over to The Black Friars website at https://www.
