The Salford Rum Company brings two effortlessly cool and great-tasting spiced rums to festivities this winter; Salford Spiced Rum and Salford Dark Spice Rum, promising to impress the palates of seasoned and novice spirits drinkers alike.

The Salford Rum Company’s premium spiced rums are created as a passionate celebration of the history, heritage and people of Salford Docks in Greater Manchester throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s.

An era whereby the city’s Salford Docks grew to be the third-largest port in the UK, the spirits take inspiration from the rums, fruits and spices from the Caribbean which were landing on British shores for the first time.

Encased in bottles designed by the iconic illustrator and artist, Dave Draws, famous for his intricate maps of northern towns and cities, the result is something special; much like the city where these rums were born, character prevails, along with great taste, versatility and confidence that even pleases the experts.

Salford Spiced Rum (40% abv) 70cl – RRP: £45:00

The original Salford Spiced Rum, much loved by local rum aficionados, was created as a tribute to the dock-workers who were the beating heart of the city’s great dock during the 1800s and 1900s.

This delicious golden spiced rum is produced in small batches, column distilled in the shadows of old Salford Docks, and expertly infused with vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and dried Caribbean fruits.

It boasts a striking, eye catching ceramic bottle, making it the perfect gift for the discerning rum lover who seeks out quality spirits for sipping and cocktail making at home.

Salford Rum Dark Spice (40% abv) 70cl – RRP: £35.00

A celebrated rum after winning a silver medal at the World Rum and Cachaca Awards, Dark Spice is the second addition to the Salford Rum range. Just like the rums unloaded into Salford Docks during its heyday, Dark Spice blends specially-selected rums from Barbados, matured for up to eight years in ex-Bourbon, American white oak casks.

Salford Rum Company’s expert distillers have combined these pot and column distilled rums with a distinct spice blend to deliver an exceptional Dark Spice rum that delights with flavours of vanilla, coconut, burnt caramel and cloves; it’s the perfect pairing to cola or ginger beer.

Dark Spice is presented within a bold and beautiful matte black ceramic bottle with a wooden stopper and features the instantly-recognisable Salford Docks map design, printed in beautiful white detail.

“Spiced rum has undergone somewhat of a renaissance over the last year or so, with discerning drinkers turning away from lower quality, sweet liquids in favour of premium, quality products of distinction. Recent figures show that flavoured and spiced rum is now the most popular type of rum in UK supermarkets and retailers, and rum was the hero of at-home lockdown drinking, growing more than any other spirit. Salford Rum has benefitted, as shoppers recognise a unique, premium brand with real, authentic links to local, northern history.

Salford Rum is crafted with expertise, passion and love right here in the heart of Salford. In Dark Spice we’ve created a rum that tastes amazing in a classic Cuba Libre, while the original Spiced Rum stands up at the heart of a multitude of cocktails. They’re versatile, tasty additions to drinks cabinets and Christmas drinks menus, and – owing to the seriously cool bottles – make great, premium and well thought out gifts.”

With the second lockdown commencing we asked the founders of Salford Rum how this has affected them.

“Since the beginning of the first lockdown back in March, Salford Rum has seen an incredible 1500 per cent uplift in online orders. When the pandemic first hit, we pivoted quickly to focus more of our business online, where we could ship bottles directly to customers from our warehouse in Salford. Staggeringly, we have shipped over 6,000 bottles so far in 2020, compared to 400 in 2019!

We see this shift as being something we will sustain post Covid-19, although we will still pick up where we left off with regards to driving the business forward and generating listings of Salford Rum in the on-trade and in retail.

Although this year has been challenging, we have enjoyed creating new relationships with customers and putting different ways of working in place. This has already reaped dividends, with customers sharing their online content and amazing photography with us, when they have created something special with one of our Salford Rum expressions. The creativity we’ve seen is amazing; there’s been no shortage of it in lockdown, people have really got behind us and the brand in a way that’s been quite defining.

These relationships have helped to shape product development for 2021 and beyond. It’s no secret that our local roots are hugely important, and sit at the heart of what we do. We see the community and local collaborations as being a fundamental part of how we grow in the coming years and hope to continue to work with like-minded businesses and charitable ventures to produce small batches of unique rums. It’s hard to express the type of year we’ve endured as a nation…but for Salford Rum, 2021 is looking bright!”
