The Tory proposals to redraw constituency boundaries are unfair, undemocratic and unacceptable according to Denton Labour MP Andrew Gywnne.

Writing following yesterday’s announcement from the Boundary Commission that will see the number of Parliamentary Constituencies fall by fifty and those across Greater Manchester reduce from twenty five to twenty three, he says while The Labour Party agrees with the principle of creating equal-sized seats, which has long been written into law and which is the main purpose of the Boundary Commissions’ work, in order to genuinely equalise constituency sizes, it is vital that the electoral register is accurate.

Under the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011 this boundary review cannot take into consideration any new voters from the electoral register included after 1 December 2015.

The Boundary Commission must be allowed to take into account the millions who registered to vote in the run-up to this years’ May elections and the EU referendum. That is the only way to ensure the public have the right level of representation.
“Whilst I recognise and welcome the fact that a number of seats within Greater Manchester will remain largely intact, including my own constituency which sees only some changes; I do however have some fears over the process as a whole.” says the MP

“My main concern is the two million citizens who have not been considered in this review which includes over 700,000 young people under the age of 25 who signed up to vote in the EU Referendum this year.I agree with the principle of cutting costs in politics; but it is baffling to me that the Tories are arbitrarily and without explanation cutting the number of MP’s from 650 to 600, whilst the numbers of Peers in the House of Lords’ continues to rise.”

Tameside will see changes to its constituency boundaries.Audenshawwill be placed with Droylsden, Failsworth, South Oldham and Lees into a new “Failsworth and Droylsden constituency”, while Denton and Reddish will form the main part of a new “Stockport North and Denton constituency and Dukenfield will join with Ashton, Staybridge and Mossley to form a revised “Ashton-under-Lyne constituency.
