Plans to lower the drink drive limit in England and Wales, which has remained unchanged since 1967 and is currently the highest in Europe are being considered as part of the biggest overhaul in road safety in a generation
The limit could be cut to 50mg, the same as in Scotland, while the limit of 80mg per 100ml of blood will be cut to just 20mg for learners and those in their two-year probationary period
Convicted drink-drivers face being forced to fit breathalysers to their cars that prevent the ignition from starting if a person is over the limit
New drivers will also face a minimum learning period before taking their test. Lessons should include more varied driving, including at night, in heavy traffic, and in wet conditions
The strategy sets out an ambitious plan to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035, with an even more stretching target of 70% for children under 16.
A consultation on mandatory eyesight testing for those over 70 will be launched, while options for cognitive testing will also be developed to protect all road users.
New measures will also target the growing problem of illegal number plates, including ‘ghost’ plates designed to fool camera systems, while also cracking down on uninsured drivers and vehicles without a valid MOT.
