Priti Patel has written a letter to the PM announcing that she’ll step down as Home Secretary tomorrow and return to the back benches

Patel was not expected to remain in the new cabinet under Liz Truss

In her letter to Boris Johnson she said

“It has been the honour of my life to serve as Home Secretary for the last three years……I am proud of our work to back the police, reform our immigration system and protect our country.”

She added that “it is ‘my choice’ to serve from the backbenches”

It is widely expected that Suella Braverman will replace her as Home Secretary

Earlier Conservative party co-chair Ben Elliot resigned, wishing ‘Liz Truss every success in leading our great country, particularly given the challenges of the winter ahead’.
