Manchester Council has confirmed to Northern Quarter residents that last summer’s pedestrianisation of parts of the Northern Quarter is to become a permenant feature.

The council has written to Northern Quarter residents over the weekend saying that the closure of Ducie Street between its junction between London Road and Dale Street is to be made permenant along with the current temporary closure of Thomas Street, extending it from the Junction of John Street to its junction with Tib Street.

A one-way road restriction is also set to be implemented on Tariff Street.

The measures were brought in last summer as bars and restaurants began to open up following the first lockdown.Parts of Deansgate were also made traffic free.

The plans are part of a Greater Manchester-wide revolution for travel on foot and by bike. More than 1,800 miles of routes with 400 miles of Dutch-style segregated bike lanes will form the UK’s largest joined-up network for walkers and cyclists.
