From the historical to modern masters, traditional to contemporary, marvels of Victorian engineering, local street corners to the football terraces, and the humdrum of everyday life to the party atmosphere of the carnival – they’re all depicted and they all paint a picture of Stockport.

Stockport Council, in partnership with Manchester Histories, will present the Picture Stockport project across Stockport town centre for one month. The project, funded by Greater Manchester Arts, will call on the people of Stockport to vote for their favourite image of the borough from a selection of 22 images. Voting is available from 12th January – 12th February 2017.

Located in different venues and shop windows around the town centre, 22 images of great works of art are being displayed for people to find. Everyone can vote for their favourite picture of Stockport either online at picturestockport.com or in person at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery and libraries across Stockport.

The public can follow the trail of artworks around Stockport town centre including works by the award winning painter Jackie Wagg, graphic artist Eamonn Murphy, and LS Lowry alongside many more.

The Picture Stockport project will ‘bring to life’ the known and hidden works of art that depict Stockport, with the eight pictures receiving the highest number of public votes being re-imagined by the people of Stockport with the help of professional artists, through a series of workshops.

The originals and new works will then be exhibited at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery from June 2017.

Councillor Kate Butler, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for Stockport residents and visitors to get to know the fantastic work of our local artists. These artworks celebrate our town and heritage and I’d encourage everyone to take part and vote for their favourite.”
