The government have turned down a scheme to build six hundred homes and a new marina on the Bridgewater Canal in Salford.

The Broakoak scheme but forward by the Peel Group, would have seen building on greenfield site that is mixture of woods, meadows and open land and stretches from Monton Green to Worsley Road.

The area was protected by policies in the city’s Unitary Development Plan and the council had originally refused planning permission for 600 homes on the site, but the company appealed and a public inquiry was held.

Peel had argued that Broadoak would offer a sensitive and sustainable development designed with the ideals of the Garden City concept.

But the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has now rejected those claims.

Councillor Derek Antrobus, Assistant Mayor for Strategic Planning at Salford City Council, said: “We are pleased that our planning policy has been strong enough to resist attempts to take away a valuable open space for development.

“We urge Peel Group to start to develop the sites it has permission for on brownfield land and to work with the council and the community through a local plan to identify the best sites to meet the housing needs of future generations.”

Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart said: “The Worsley Greenway is a precious asset for the people of Salford. There is no doubt we need new homes but there are many other sites that should be used first and can be used away from our precious green spaces.”
