Oldham Council Leader Sean Fielding is committing extra funding to street cleaning to support his ambition for a cleaner borough.
Councillor Fielding, who made neighbourhood services one of his four priorities as the new Council Leader, is investing an additional £600,000 per year into Oldham’s street cleaning team.
In total, this will see 24 extra staff working on area and street cleaning across the borough.
This investment, which was approved by Cabinet on 20 August 2018, will help the council to employ additional Dandy cart operators, supported by an extra mobile team to transport the waste faster.
To provide a more efficient service, the mobile street cleaning teams will work closely with enforcement officers investigating any dumped rubbish to reduce the time taken for it to be cleared.
Oldham’s streets will now be cleaned seven days a week – including Bank Holidays – with dedicated teams also focusing on identified areas of priority within East and West Oldham.
Councillor Fielding said: “Since being elected as Leader of Oldham Council I have been clear that we must get the basics right and clean streets are absolutely part of that.
“I’m putting my money where my mouth is and this investment is the council’s commitment to a cleaner Oldham that we can all be proud of.
“However, this is something that we can’t do alone. We need everyone to do their bit if we really want to make a difference.
“The majority of people treat our borough with respect but I urge the selfish few to stop littering our streets. Anyone who witnesses littering or fly-tipping please report those responsible and we will take action.
“We’re doing our bit with this investment, please do your bit by not littering and maybe even organise a community litter pick. The result is a cleaner Oldham for us all to enjoy.”
