Labour’s female leader of Oldham Council Jean Stretton has been ousted from her position.

Cllr Streeton took over the role vacated by the election of the previous leader Jim McMahon as a MP in January 2016 but last night Councillor Sean Fielding was elected leader of the Labour Group and will become council leader later this month.

Fielding was first elected to the council in 2012 and represents the Ward of Failsworth West.

Writing on Twitter Cllr Fielding said

“I’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the outgoing Leader and thank Jean for her public service. I know that being the Council Leader is not an easy job, something I am sure I’ll come to appreciate even more during my time in this role.”

He added that:

I am however truly honoured to be given the opportunity to serve at a higher level in local politics and I will work hard to deliver the very best for the entire borough in this new role.
