Starting in the FA Cup and Salford City lost to fellow League Two side Newport County 3-0 to exit in the second round. Things started to dismantle for Salford following Thomas-Asante’s red card at the start of the second half for a rash challenge on Newport goalkeeper Tom King. Three goals followed in a largely dominant half by the home side.

Oldham Athletic advanced with a 2-1 win over Bradford City. Oldham went behind after 11 minutes on the clock from the penalty spot. However, Harry Kewell’s men showed the fight to get them back level 7 minutes later and it was Danny Rowe with another spectacular strike to send the visiting side through to the third round.

Finally, Stockport County finally overcame Yeovil Town in extra time, following a 2-2 scoreline at the full-time whistle. Stockport had to come from behind twice in both halves to force extra time. A Connor Jennings strike on the 100th minute was enough to see Jim Gannon’s men into the hat for the next round.

In League One, Bolton Wanderers took advantage of many teams playing in the cup to gain ground on the play-off places. A 3-0 win over Southen United sees the Trotters a point from the top seven. Ian Evatt’s men have finally found their feet and starting to string results together.

Altrincham in the National League secured a 2-0 win over Maidenhead United. Two second-half goals from Hancock and Peers moves Altrincham one point away from the play-off places, albeit with them playing two or three games more than the teams around them.
