Forced instalments of prepayment energy meters in homes of customers over 85 in Britain will be banned under new rules from Ofgem.

The regulator has also ruled that suppliers will have to give all customers more chances to clear their debts before making them switch.

600,000 people were forced to switch to prepayment meters after struggling to pay their bills in 2022.

The new code of Practice follows the temporary stopping of the practice back in February after it was revealed that British Gas was forcefully installing meters

The code says that Companies must have had at least 10 attempts to get in touch with customers prior to any installation

There must also be a site welfare visit and the prepayment meter should have £30 of credit
