Northern Mayors have issued a statement after yesterday’s decision to exclude any Northern Universities from the Global Talent Fund
Twelve leading institutions have been selected to deliver the £54m Global Talent Fund, attracting world-class researchers to the UK by the Department for Science and Innovation but none further north than Birmingham were selected
the Fund is designed to attract a total of 60-80 top researchers (both lead researchers and their teams) to the UK, working in the eight high priority sectors critical to the Government’s modern Industrial Strategy.
Now Northern Mayors including Greater Manchester’s Andy Burnham have raised the issue that Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle could not get funding from the Global Talent Fund
In the statement the Mayors write
“We are deeply disappointed that universities in the North of England have been overlooked in the allocation of national innovation funding
We’re urging UK Research and Innovation to think again.”
“The North is home to some of the UK’s most innovative, high-performing universities. These institutions drive the development of life-changing technologies and work hand in hand with industry to create good jobs and grow the economy. Their exclusion from the Global Talent Fund undermines their contribution to the UK’s economic success, as well as the Government’s stated commitment to re-balance our economy.
