Andrew Stephenson has been appointed HS2 minister by Boris Johnson.

Stephenson, who was promoted in last week’s cabinet reshuffle and will also be responsible for the Transpennine and Northern Powerhouse Rail routes, vowed to ‘keep a firm grip on these vital projects’.

He was handed the role after Boris Johnson confirmed last week that the project linking London with Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester would go ahead.

He was previously Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development from 25 July 2019 to 13 February 2020. He was first elected as Conservative MP for Pendle in May 2010.

He will also oversee the £39bn Northern Powerhouse Rail high speed rail project linking the major cities of the North and the £29bn Trans-pennine Route upgrade between Leeds, Manchester and York.
