Emotional Biodiversity, a powerful new digital installation by artist and filmmaker Di Mainstone, is now open at Stockroom in Stockport.

Set in a speculative future where Stockport has been evacuated due to catastrophic flooding, Emotional Biodiversity unfolds across two parallel worlds: a physical one above ground, and a digital underground world brought to life through 3D modelling.

The film follows a fictional character known as The Last (played by local performer and singer Charlotte Cartwright), a lone wanderer whose beliefs place the highest value on nature. The Last scours the Stockport landscape using homemade instruments designed to seek out sacred bulbs, which she stores in her Bulb Bank for safekeeping.

At the heart of the exhibition are a series of 25 bulb artworks created by Stockport residents and  interview recordings, in which they expressed their deep connection to the town, shared memories of the past, and their hopes for Stockport’s future. Their voices form the emotional backbone of the artwork and their words have become its soundtrack.

The exhibition features multiple screen based work as well as an exhibition of sculptures, props and costumes, suitable for audiences of all ages, and will be on display at Stockroom from 10 July – 28 September, 2025.
