More than a third of inmates at Forest Bank Prison in Salford feel unsafe and violence at the prison has more than doubled in three years.

The latest report on the Category B prison by HM Inspectors of Prisons also found that Self-harm had increased significantly and was much higher than they expected to see. There had also been one self-inflicted death since the last inspection in 2016.

The prison though said the report had access to good data concerning the problem of self-harm, and recommendations made by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, who investigated the death, were being implemented.

The prison, which first opened in 2000 holds 1460 male prisoners.Inspectors found that relationships between staff and prisoners were respectful and polite.

However concerns were raised that staff, many of whom were very inexperienced, did not assert sufficient authority when supervising prisoners, with the danger that some prisoner groups were able to take advantage.
