Greater Manchester Police have revealed that they have launched a fraud enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the financial demise of Bury Football Club.

Police say that the enquiry has been sparked by a report they received on the 18th June.

Owner Steve Dale a statement last week when he said that a “­Serious Fraud investigation” into unnamed individuals to have been involved with the club.

Dale said he had been “working with the police” and that it would soon be shown that “all I have done is help the club”, but he did not respond to requests for comment on whether he himself had been behind the report to the police.

The report was sent a month before Dale agreed a company voluntary arrangement with the club’s creditors to repay 25 per cent of the £9million they were owed.

Bury became the first club to be expelled from the Football League since 1992 last week
